Campfire Chat: Art & Science of Decision Making with Ian Vacin from Karbon

On February 21st, 2023 Liz and Heather were joined by Ian Vacin of Karbon for a Campfire Chat about the Art & Science of Decision Making. Ian is the co-founder and Chief Partnerships Officer of Karbon! Ian was also Heather’s mentor when she first started off as a speaker. He is an industrial engineer, he has worked at Inuit, Xero, and then started Karbon. Karbon was one of our Camp Sponsors in 2022! This is the first episode that we have had full-blown interaction with our audience that wasn’t a party.

The Art of decision making is best described as “some decisions are based on emotion and your feelings” and not necessarily a right answer but the best for the situation you have. This is about helping yourself get to a sense of clarity so that you feel like you’ve made the best choice. The science could be, maybe looking for the best app. It can be a defined answer that you can take a qualitative decision but it can be made into quantitative to help solve it.

Ian gave us an example of when he was buying a car for his in-laws. His father-in-law had certain requirements and he needed to  understand those and the importance when trying to decide what kind of car to get. So not only can the Art & Science of Decision making be used in your firm, but also in your personal life. Realizing what your big decision you are being faced with is the first step to finding your answer!

We launched a series of questions in the poll (making this the interactive session we mentioned). The first question was “What new area of focus would you like to explore in your firm?” Some of the possible answers for this poll were IT Consulting & Training, Payroll, Bookkeeping, Strategic Advisory, Accounting, and more. Once you have your question that you need a decision on you would host a Discovery Meeting to start gathering your information to make a decision.

This weeks episode didn’t have a drink but sure was loaded with some really cool and helpful information. Be Sure to check it out on our website or on Youtube. To learn more about Karbon, check out their website.
